Abstract The aim of this study was to verify the potential of the colorimetric technique in the identification of some species marketed as “tauari” in the Brazilian Amazon. CIE L* a* b* parameters were applied to determine the colour of 35 wood samples from the main wood poles of the State of Para, Brazil, and the scientific collections of the Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi (Walter A. Egler Collection) and Embrapa Amazônia Oriental. From each sample, data were obtained in the three wood surfaces: transversal, longitudinal tangential and longitudinal radial. The coordinate b*, which showed the yellow pigment, exerted greater weight in the color characterization of the 35 samples marketed as tauari, being more evident in the tangential and radial sections. In PCA, MGW wood samples showed considerably distinct color patterns in relation to PA and IAN samples, and the h and L* parameters provided better informations for distinguishing species from sample sources. The colorimetric technique can be used as an auxiliary tool in the identification of wood. However, the simultaneous use of colorimetry with the anatomical description of wood is suggested, given the complexity of the species-level separation in “tauari” group.

Resumo Com a determinação do quanto de biomassa florestal é gerada após as intervenções culturais é possível definir as áreas passíveis de exploração. Com isso, o objetivo do trabalho foi quantificar e estimar a oferta de biomassa de Pinus taeda L. disponível após as intervenções culturais. O experimento foi realizado em reflorestamentos nos municípios dos estados do Paraná e Santa Catarina, com idades de 3 anos (primeira desrama), 5 anos (segunda desrama), 7 anos (terceira desrama), 11 anos (primeiro desbaste) 19 anos (segundo desbaste), 23 e 33 anos (cortes rasos). Para cada idade foram amostradas 10 árvores e quantificados os componentes acículas, galhos, ponteira e casca. Após o corte raso, aos 23 anos houve maior disponibilidade de biomassa individual (372,6 kg.árv-1) e por unidade de área (144,4 t.ha-1), sendo composto principalmente por galhos (69,3%), seguido das acículas (17,9%), casca (11,0%) e ponteira (1,8%) por unidade de área. A correlação entre a massa dos componentes da biomassa por árvore e as variáveis independentes foi significativa e superior a 0,52. A menor correlação foi observada entre estas e a quantidade ofertada de ponteiras. Os modelos de regressão selecionados para estimar a massa de biomassa em função das variáveis independentes tiveram R2aju superiores a 83%, baixos desvios padrões e coeficientes de variação.

Abstract Along with the determination of how much of forest biomass is generated after the cultural interventions, it is possible to define areas that can be exploited. Thus, the objective of this work was to quantify and estimate the biomass supply of Pinus taeda L. available after cultural interventions. The experiment was carried out in populations in the cities of Paraná and Santa Catarina states, with ages of 3 years (first pruning), 5 years (second pruning), 7 years (third pruning), 11 years (first thinning), 19 years (second thinning), 23 and 33 years (harvesting). For each age, 10 trees were sampled and the components of the leaves, twigs, canopy and bark were quantified. After harvesting at 23 years old there was greater availability of individual biomass (372.6 kg. tree-1) and per unit area (144.4 t.ha-1), being composed mainly of twigs (69.3%), followed by leaves (17.9%), bark (11.0%) and canopy (1.8%) per unit area. The correlation between the mass of the components of the biomass per tree and the independent variables was significant and higher to 0.52. The lower correlation was observed between these and the mass of canopy. The regression models selected to estimate the mass of biomass from the independent variables had R2adju higher than 83%, low standard deviations and low coefficients of variation.

Abstract: The modification of wood by thermal treatments produces characteristic changes in its chemical composition and surface color and can improve the structural and esthetic quality. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the potential of near infrared and visible spectroscopy to predict the modifications in chemical composition of Eucalyptys grandis and Pinus taeda after thermal treatment. Near infrared and visible spectra were collected directly on the longitudinal surface of wood samples. The thermally modified wood of both species showed higher content of lignin and extractives than the untreated wood. There was darkening of thermally modified wood, as a result of chemical modification caused by heat. The Near infrared/visible technique identified the groups that were modified by treatment. NIR and visible spectroscopy can be used to predict chemical composition of natural or thermally treated Eucalyptus grandis and Pinus taeda.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar celuloses microfibriladas (CMF) produzidas pelo processo mecânico, através de 10 passesno moinho Super Masscolloider Masuko Sangyo, utilizando polpa kraft industrial branqueada e não branqueada de Eucalyptus spp. A caracterização das CMF foi realizada através da morfologia (MET), cristalinidade, viscosidade, potencial zeta e análise termogravimétrica (TGA). Independentemente do tipo de fibra, o microprocessamento reduziu drasticamente as dimensões do material de modo a ser obtidas estruturas com dimensões de escala nanométrica. A CMF produzida com polpa não branqueada preservou a cor marrom original da polpa, o que pode ser vantajosa para algumas aplicações no setor de embalagem, enquanto que filmes produzidos com polpa branqueada são mais translúcidos. As CMF apresentaram menores valores de viscosidade e índice de cristalinidade em relação a polpa celulósica. O potencial zeta foi influenciado pelo tipo de fibra utilizado para produzir as CMF. As principais transições térmicas nas CMF ocorrem após 200 ºC, demonstrando o potencial desse material em aplicações com temperatura elevada.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to characterize microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) produced with a Masuko Sangyo Super Masscolloider using bleached and unbleached pulp of Eucalyptus spp. The MFC was characterized regarding morphology (TEM), crystallinity, viscosity, zeta potential and thermal properties (TGA). Regardless of the fiber type, the processing dramatically reduced the dimensions of the material, so as to obtain structures with nanometric dimensions. MFC produced with unbleached pulp preserved the original brown color of the pulp, which may be advantageous for some applications in the packaging sector, while films produced with bleached pulp were more translucent. The MFC showed lower values of viscosity and crystallinity index in relation to cellulosic pulp. The zeta potential was influenced by the type of fiber used. The main thermal transitions in MFC occurred after 200 ºC, demonstrating the potential of this material forhigh-temperature applications.

RESUMO Foram avaliadas as características da polpa kraft com branqueamento (c/b) e sem branqueamento (s/b) em diferentes tempos de refino da espécie Acacia mearnsii De Wild. A composição química mostrou baixas concentrações de lignina ácida insolúvel, extrativos totais e solubilidade em NaOH a 1%. O rendimento bruto de 47,62% foi regular devido às características da fibra. O Kappa foi 4,5 (c/b) e 12,3 (s/b), ambos baixos. O índice de drenabilidade 26 oSR com T30’ de refino (c/b) ficou próximo do ideal. Os maiores índices nas propriedades mecânicas foram: tração, com 66,17 N.m/g em T30’ de refino s/b; rasgo, com 12,94 mN.m2/g em T15’ de refino c/b; estouro, com 5,21 KPa.m2/g em T30’ de refino c/b, e nas propriedades ópticas, a alvura, com 81,8% em T0’ de refino c/b e opacidade em 97,1%, com T0’ de refino s/b. Com essas características, a espécie apresenta potencial para o setor na fabricação de papéis sanitários tissue, decorativos, dentre outros.

ABSTRACT Were evaluated the characteristics of bleached (w/b) and unbleached (u/b) Kraft pulp at different refining times of the species acacia mearnsii De Wild. The chemical composition showed lower concentrations of insoluble lignin acid, total extractives and solubility in NaOH to 1%. The raw yield of 47.62% was regular due to the fiber characteristics. The Kappa was 4.5 (w/b) and 12.3 (u/b), both considered low. The drainability index 26oSR with T30’ refining (w/b) was near to ideal. The highest indexes in the mechanical properties were: tensile with 66.17N.m/g in refining T30’ (u/b); tear with 12.94mN.m2/g in refining T15’(w/b); burst with 5.21KPa.m2/g in refining T30’(w/b) and the whiteness optical properties of 81.8% in refining T0 (w/b) and opacity of 97.1% in refining (u/b).With these characteristic, the species has industry potential for the manufacturing of sanitary “tissue”, decorative, among others papers.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo determinar a influência das dimensões de biomassa sobre as alterações em suas propriedades durante a estocagem, visando seu uso na geração de energia. O experimento foi realizado no Município de Lages, SC, entre outubro de 2003 e fevereiro de 2005. Foram utilizadas toras com casca de Pinus taeda L. e Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden e costaneiras de Pinus spp., estocadas em pilhas, por um período de seis meses. As amostras para análise foram coletadas no estado recém-colhido, com dois, quatro e seis meses de estocagem. Foram utilizados quatro lotes, colhidos e armazenados segundo as estações do ano, permanecendo sob estocagem entre os meses de outubro a maio, janeiro a agosto, maio a novembro e agosto a fevereiro. As propriedades avaliadas foram: teor de umidade na base úmida, poder calorífico superior e líquido e teor de cinzas. As dimensões tiveram maior influência no teor de umidade e poder calorífico líquido. As costaneiras de Pinus sofreram maior perda de umidade, maior ganho de poder calorífico superior e inferior e menor teor de cinzas durante a estocagem. A costaneira foi também o material mais heterogêneo, com relação às variações ocorridas no armazenamento. As toras de Pinus tiveram a menor perda de umidade e o menor ganho energético. De forma geral e considerando as propriedades mais importantes para a geração de energia, as dimensões da biomassa tiveram maior influência que a espécie sobre a qualidade da biomassa na estocagem.

The objective of the present study was to determine the influence of the size and shape of the biomass on the changes in its properties during storage, aiming its use on energy production. The experiment was conducted in Lages - Santa Catarina State, Brazil, from October 2003 to February 2005. Logs with bark of Pinus taeda L.and Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden, and Pinus spp edge, were stored in piles for six months. Samples for analysis were collected in freshly harvested state, with two, four and six months of storage. Four batches, collected and stored were used according to the seasons of the year, remaining in storage from October to May, from January to August, from May to November and from August to February. The properties evaluated were: moisture content in wet basis, gross and net calorific value and ash content. The shape and size had greater influence on the moisture content and on net calorific value. The pine edge suffered greater loss of moisture content, higher gain and lower gross calorific value and lower ash content during storage. This material was also the most heterogeneous, with respect to changes occurred during storage. The logs of Pinus had the lowest moisture loss and lower energy gain. In general, and considering the most important properties for generating energy, the size of the material had greater influence than the species on the behavior of biomass storage.

RESUMO O conhecimento das propriedades da madeira é de fundamental importância para indicação dos potenciais de utilização final deste material. Na busca por novas alternativas para caracterização rápida, simples e confiável, destacam-se as avaliações não destrutivas da madeira. A espectroscopia no infravermelho próximo (NIRS) vem sendo utilizada como método não destrutivo que permite obter informações qualitativas e quantitativas dos constituintes da biomassa através da interação das ondas eletromagnéticas do infravermelho próximo com a amostra. Este trabalho tem como objetivo fornecer uma revisão sobre a técnica da espectroscopia no infravermelho próximo e sua aplicação no setor florestal. A técnica está presente em praticamente todas as áreas, devido ao nível de desenvolvimento que esta tecnologia atingiu nos últimos anos. A espectroscopia NIR tem se mostrado uma ferramenta rápida e eficiente para substituição dos diversos ensaios que determinam a qualidade da madeira.

ABSTRACT The knowledge of wood properties is the fundamental importance for the indication of the potential and use of this material. In the search for new alternatives for a fast, simple and reliable characterization, there are the non-destructive evaluations of wood. The near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used as a non-destructive method that allows qualitative and quantitative information of the constituents of biomass through the interaction of electromagnetic waves with near-infrared next to the sample. This work aims to provide a review of the technique of near infrared spectroscopy and its application in forestry. The technique is used in virtually all areas due to the level of development that this technology has reached in recent years. NIR spectroscopy has proved a quick and efficient replacement of several tests that determine the quality of the wood. This is a literature review and state of the art on the theme.

RESUMO A região de Lages, Santa Catarina, tem sua economia baseada na indústria de base florestal, principalmente de transformação primária, que é caracterizada pelo baixo rendimento e grande produção de resíduos, o que causa problemas ambientais, logísticos e financeiros. A utilização destes resíduos em sistemas de cogeração tem sido uma alternativa economicamente rentável, desde o ano de 2005, no local de estudo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar um mapeamento da frequência de uso e disponibilidade dos resíduos de biomassa florestal utilizados na operação de uma planta de cogeração, entre 2005 e 2009, em Lages, Santa Catarina, bem como avaliar a qualidade energética deste combustível. Foram utilizados os dados do controle de qualidade mensal das propriedades energéticas da biomassa usada na geração de energia, no período de 2005 a 2009. Os resíduos foram caracterizados segundo a frequência de análises de cada tipo de biomassa e em função do teor de umidade, teor de cinza, poder calorífico superior e líquido, para a caracterização energética. O resíduo com maior disponibilidade foi a casca de Pinus, porém, os mais eficientes energeticamente foram o cavaco com casca de Pinus e a mistura de todos os resíduos usados nos sistemas de geração de energia.

ABSTRACT In the region of Lages, in Santa Catarina state, the economy is based on the forest industry, especially for primary processing, and this is characterized by low yields and high production of waste, constituting environmental problems, logistical and financial support. The use of biomass in co-generation systems has been an economically profitable, since the year 2005, the place of study. In this context, the aims of this study were to map the frequency of use and the availability of wood waste used for co-generating of energy in Lages, Santa Catarina, and to evaluate the energetic properties. The sample data and the results of the energetic properties of biomass samples used in a co-generating energy in the period 2005 to 2008. The residues were characterized in terms of moisture content, ash content, gross calorific value and net calorific value. The results showed that the most available residue is the pine bark, although the most energetically efficient ones were the chip with pine-bark and the mixture of all waste systems used in generating power.

RESUMO O bambu é uma planta monocotiledônea de origem tropical, de rápido crescimento, sendo considerado um importante regenerador ambiental devido ao seu sistema radicular. O Dendrocalamus giganteus é popularmente conhecido por bambu-gigante, sendo uma espécie entouceirante de grande porte, cujos colmos podem variar de 24 a 40 metros de altura, com diâmetros entre 10 e 20 cm. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo analisar quimicamente os colmos do bambu-gigante visando fornecer informações sobre a sua composição química nas idades de 2 a 6 anos. Os colmos do bambu foram coletados na área Experimental Agrícola do Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica da UNESP-Bauru, onde é realizado o manejo sistemático de diversas espécies de bambu para fins de pesquisas e divulgação dessa planta. Foram retiradas amostras da base entre bambus com idade de 2 a 6 anos de uma mesma touceira, totalizando 5 amostras, com 2 metros de altura cada, colhidas na lua minguante no mês de março. As análises químicas foram feitas com os entrenós, utilizando as normas e procedimentos da TAPPI. A porcentagem média de extrativos em água quente, extrativos em água fria, extrativos totais e teor de cinzas não apresentaram relação direta com a idade. A maior porcentagem de extrativos em água quente, com valor de 12,04%, extrativos em água fria, com 10,25%, e extrativos totais, com 12,91%, foi observada aos 2 anos de idade. A maior porcentagem de cinzas foi obtida aos três anos, com valores de 1,09%. O teor médio de extrativos em NaOH diminui de 25,72% aos dois anos para 20,17% aos seis anos de idade. O mesmo comportamento foi observado para os extrativos em etanol tolueno, diminuindo de 10,91% para 4,61%. O teor médio de lignina não sofreu influência da idade, variando de 22,66 a 24,11%.

ABSTRACT Bamboo is a monocotyledon of tropical origin which grows fast and is considered an important environment regenerator because of its root system. Dendrocalamus giganteus is popular learned by giant bamboo, being a big bush species, its culms can be from 24 to 40 meters high, with diameters from 10 and 20 centimeters. This work had the objective of a chemical analysis from giant bamboo to aim at giving information from its chemical composition from 2 to 6 years of age. Bamboo culms were collected in the Agriculture Experimental area of the Mechanical Engineering Department of UNESP - Bauru, where it is carried out the systematic handling from different bamboo species to this plant research and divulgation. Samples from base were collected from 2 and 6 years in the same bush, in total of 5 samples, with 2 high meters each, cropped in March, half-moon. Chemical analysis was done with internodes using TAPPI Methods. The average percentage extractives from hot water, cool water, total extractives and ash content were not related to the age. The major percentage of hot water extractives, with values of 12.04%, cold water extractives, with 10.25%, and total extractives, with 12.91%, was observed by the age of two years. The major ash content was obtained on three years, with value of 1.09%. The mean value of NaOH extractives decreased from 25.72%, in two years, to 20.17% at six years old. The same behavior was observed for ethanol toluene extractives, decreasing from 10.91% to 4.61%. The mean lignin content was not influenced by age, varying from 22.66 to 24.11%.

RESUMO Foi determinada a variação da composição química da madeira com casca em função da época de colheita e do tempo de estocagem. O experimento foi em Lages/SC. Toras com casca de Pinus taeda L. e Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden foram coletadas após a colheita e com dois, quatro e seis meses de armazenamento. Foram avaliados: a solubilidade da madeira em água, o hidróxido de sódio e álcool-tolueno, e o teor de cinzas. A composição química da madeira com casca variou em função da época de colheita das árvores. Nas épocas de primavera e verão, foram obtidas as maiores quantidades de extrativos e teor de cinzas. O tempo de estocagem causou variações na composição química da biomassa florestal. Ocorreram alterações em função da oxidação e da transformação dos extrativos, resultando no aumento da solubilidade em água e álcool tolueno. As variações na composição química, isoladamente, não contribuíram para a melhoria da qualidade energética da biomassa. ABSTRACT This study determined the chemical composition variation of forest biomass according to harvest season and storage time. The experiment was carried out in Lages, State of Santa Catarina. Logs with bark of Pinus taeda L. and Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden were collected after harvest with two, four and six months of storage time. Solubility of wood in water, sodium hydroxide, toluene and alcohol and ash contents were evaluated. The chemical composition of wood with bark varied according to the harvest season of the trees. The highest values of extractives and ash content were obtained in summer and spring. The storage time caused variations in the chemical composition of forest biomass. Changes caused by the oxidation and transformation of extractives have occurred, resulting in increased solubility in water and alcohol toluene. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, determinar o tempo ideal de estocagem da biomassa florestal, para uso na geração de energia, através da análise da variação das propriedades físicas e químicas da madeira com casca, durante o período de armazenamento. O estudo foi realizado no Município de Lages, SC, durante 18 meses. No experimento foram utilizadas toras com casca de Pinus taeda e Eucalyptus dunnii, de diâmetros variados, e costaneiras de Pinus spp., estocadas em pilhas. O material para análise foi coletado no estado recém colhido (testemunha), com dois, quatro e seis meses de estocagem. Foram utilizados quatro lotes, colhidos e estocados nas épocas de primavera, verão, outono e inverno. As propriedades avaliadas foram: teor de umidade na base úmida, poder calorífico superior e líquido e teor de cinzas. Com os resultados demonstrou-se que o tempo de estocagem teve influência sobre o teor de umidade e poder calorífico líquido, mas não sobre o poder calorífico superior e teor de cinzas. O tempo ideal de estocagem variou entre dois a quatro meses, dependendo da espécie e forma da biomassa e época do ano em que foi realizada a estocagem. O material de melhor qualidade após estocagem foi a costaneira de Pinus, seguida das toras de Eucalyptus. O pior comportamento foi das toras de Pinus.

This work aims to determine an optimal storage time of forest biomass for use in energy production, through analysis of variations in physical and chemical properties of with bark timber over the storage period. The study was conducted in the municipality of Lages, SC, over a span of 18 months. The experiment used with bark logs of Pinus taeda and Eucalyptus dunnii, with varying diameters, and slabs of Pinus spp., stored in piles. The material was sampled freshly harvested (control), after two, after four and after six months of storage. Four lots were used, harvested and stored at the spring, summer, autumn and winter seasons. Properties being assessed included moisture content (wet basis), gross calorific value, net calorific value and ash content. Results demonstrated that storage time influenced moisture content and net calorific value, yet it had no influence on gross calorific value and ash content. Optimal storage time ranged from two to four months, depending on the species, form of biomass and storage season. The best behavior regarding quality after storage was from Pinus slabs, followed by Eucalyptus logs and Pinus logs, the latter showing the worst behavior.

ABSTRACT This work determined the energy balance and yield of the energy from a wood industry. The study was carried out by examining a monthly historical series of data (january 1998/july 1999). The results indicate that the coogeneration of energy is a possible process. The major consumer of thermal and power was the sawmill. The comsumption of power by each product was greater in the veneer, the saw wood and boards, while the saw wood, veneer and boards consumed more thermal energy. The energetical consumption by product was inversely proportional to the disponibility of waste to generate energy. All these sectors were energetically self-sufficient.

RESUMO Determinou-se o balanço e rendimento energéticos de uma indústria madeireira integrada. Utilizou-se uma série mensal média de dados (janeiro/1998 a julho/1999). Conclui-se que a cogeração de energia é um processo viável. O maior consumidor de energia elétrica e térmica foi a serraria, seguido dos painéis para a térmica e da laminadora para a elétrica. O consumo por produto foi maior na lâmina, madeira serrada e painéis para energia elétrica, e madeira serrada, lâmina e painéis para a térmica. O consumo energético por produto foi inversamente proporcional à disponibilização de resíduos para a energia. Todos os setores foram autosuficientes energeticamente.
